ALFRED M. ZARRELLA

Alfred M. Zarrella, originally from Brockton, Massachusetts, retired from the Army in 1973 and started working at Belvoir Lanes in February 1974. Since becoming their director, he has developed an extensive rapport between the military and the civilian factions of our Nation's Capital Area Bowling Association family.

As director of Fort Belvoir Bowling Center, Al exemplifies the qualities of a member of the Hall of Fame with his people oriented attitude, by understanding the importance of encouraging novice bowlers to strive toward improvement on a personal basis and does this by instructions designed to build-confidence.

With more experienced bowlers, Al is a fierce competitor, but doesn't hesitate to cheer on the opposition with a fine spirit of sportsmanship.

Al serves at Fort Belvoir as advisor to the youth leagues. He was responsible for bringing the AJBC Scratch Invitational Finals to Fort Belvoir for the past two years.

Because of Al's efforts the Bowlers Victory Legion Kickoff Tournament was held at a military house for the first time ever.

In the past few years, he has organized the Ladies Stroh's Charity Open, the proceeds going to the Special Olympics and Send-A-Special Kid to Camp Benefit Tournament. He has been responsible for obtaining the special equipment, bowling shirts, trophies, and guidance for the youth at Fort Belvoir.

By working closely with the Army community service, he has ensured the children have an opportunity to enjoy an activity so dear to his heart and to grow and develop a sense of fulfillment in themselves.

A man who cares so much about others has earned a place in our Nation's Capital Area Bowling Association Hall of Fame, and a well-deserved place.
