Several changes have been made for the 2005 event:

    YABA board voices concern
    over best interests of youth

GREENDALE, Wis. (May 7, 2004) — The Young American Bowling Alliance board of directors announced that it did not approve the United States Bowling Congress proposal following the announcement that the Women's International Bowling Congress and American Bowling Congress delegations and the USA Bowling board of directors approved the USBC merger May 5. The YABA board of directors based its decision solely on what it believes is in the best interest of youth bowlers.

“YABA has been a major supporter of the initial USBC proposals and has been very involved in the pursuit of the merger of bowling’s membership organizations,” said YABA President Mitch Mitchell. “While YABA applauds the approval of the USBC merger by ABC, WIBC, and USA Bowling, the YABA board of directors feel that the modifications made to this year’s USBC proposal have raised concerns that the resulting structure may not address the best interests for youth bowling programs and services at this time.”

YABA could revisit the USBC proposal prior to the May 15 deadline for the Plan of Merger at a board of directors meeting scheduled for May 14-16 in Milwaukee. If the USBC merger were revisited in Milwaukee, the 19-person board would need a majority vote to approve the Plan of Merger.

“YABA is concerned that the youth will be lost in the merger process,” Mitchell said. “At this time, the YABA board of directors believe that YABA is still the best method for serving all youth bowlers and hopes the new USBC will embrace YABA as the youth service provider for the entire industry.”

The Milwaukee board meeting is being conducted to discuss the USBC Plan of Merger, YABA contingency planning and the future of the organization.

Shirley to host Youth Scratch Shoot-Out

On December 21, Bowl America Shirley (6450 Edsall Road in Alexandria, Va. [703/354-3300]) will host the final Youth Scratch Shoot-Out tournament of the year. The field in this single division event is limited to the first 60 reserved spots.

All bowlers will bowl five games of qualifying, and pins will carry over to Round 2. The top 32 will bowl three additional games of qualifying, and then the top 16, after eight games of qualifying, will be seeded and begin a single-game, head-to-head, double-elimination finals. Bowlers will continue until they have two losses in head-to-head matches, at which time they will be eliminated. The double-elimination format will continue until one bowler—the champion—is left with either zero or one loss.

A full field will generate a top prize of a $1,000 scholarship. The top 16 bowlers are guaranteed scholarship prizes, with special scholarship prizes awarded to the top three qualifiers after the first eight games of qualifying. The entry fee is $70.

Contact Dana Gore (703/878-6721) to reserve a spot, which will be held until 9:30 a.m. on December 21, at which time bowlers on the waiting list will be awarded spots. Competition begins at 10 a.m., and sign-ups start at 8:30 a.m.
